This pysanky is created on a double yolk turkey egg with aniline dyes and beeswax and features a bright palette with interlocking bands. I designed this egg based off my mandala, ‘Tiger King’ that centered on a jungle themed layering of leaves and hidden viral particles in the background. I created the original mandala during the early months of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.
This pysanka goes beyond the traditional themes of the craft eggs originating from Ukraine. Not only does it incorporate modern patterns that tell stories of life today, it also uses techniques that require a high level of skill to execute. In addition to blending between color applications, the egg is heavily etched in acid to create a 3D effect and varnished with a high cost UV resistant clear coat to resist fading. Each piece is handmade and cannot be replicated by machine.
You can see the wax melt reveal of this egg here.
