This mandala celebrates the annual run of the red salmon in the Kenai river. Each year, nearly 1 million fish make their way upstream to spawn, lay eggs and die. During the process the fish turn a deep red color and are known for being particularly good to eat.
I drew the lifecycle into this mandala with brass instruments oxygenating the water. I find it particularly beautiful that the salmon fight so hard to meet their fate. As humans, we tend to run away from death, not toward it.
